Sofia Sabbagh is of Irish and Palestinian descent, based on stolen Wurundjeri land. She works as an artist, illustrator and art therapist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Her most recent work involved coordinating artists to illustrate the Palestinian journalists murdered by the IDF since 7 October. Her comics have been published by the University of Melbourne, Samandal comics, Overland journal, joCAT and more.

A brief natural history of fungi in Australia

Some fungi live inside plants. Some live on their surfaces, and some live around plant roots. Pre-colonisation, a tree may have had 2-50 different types of companion fungi, each with their own community, which were spread across the ecosystem. The more native fungi, and the larger the fungi community, the healthier the tree.

Logging burnt forests

I was picked up to go to a citizen science camp in Goongerah-East Gippsland. I'd come to Melbourne for respite, after the Lismore flood. I was excited to see Audrey, who I'd first met at a citizen science camp 10 years ago. But the forest looked completely different to how it had looked the last time I'd visited.
