To my friends and comrades, I’m not sure if there’s language to communicate how this last month has utterly changed me. This time a few weeks ago the busyness and chaos of bricolage arts and academic labour had so efficiently distracted me from my anxiety about the upcoming referendum that I forgot to prepare myself for its inevitable conclusion.

This year is not like every other year. Our schedule over the past month has been taken over by essays and public statements on Palestine and Gaza. Tomorrow, our chief editors Evelyn Araluen and Jonathan Dunk will give an account of the politics that ground our solidarity for the Palestinian cause. In the meantime, I want to express our deep gratitude to those have trusted us with their words, and assure them that we don’t take this privilege lightly.

This competition is open to all writers, nationally and internationally, at any stage of their writing career.

Established in 2007 and supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, the Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize for New and Emerging Poets seeks poetry by writers who have published no more than one collection of poems under their own name (that is writers who’ve had zero collections published, or one solo collection published). It remains one of the richest prizes for emerging poets, and is open to poets anywhere in the world. In 2023, the major prize is $6000, with a second prize of $2000 and a third prize of $1000. All three winners will be published in Overland.

What does Subscriberthon Day One have in store?

Several years back I visited the former premises of Overland, a ramshackle house posing as an office on a residential street in Footscray (or so I remember). Within, ducking from room to room, was ‘Team Overland’, including former editor Jeff Sparrow and current editor Jacinda Woodhead. That quiet afternoon, in which I was interviewed for an intern position, changed my life.
