Conference on Despair


It was a conference
on despair.
Those gathered

spoke little and softly.
They had come for you
the keynote speaker

and there was a sense of awe
at your
expertise, the years of study

now beyond doubt.
You remained on the dais
recumbent throughout.

Amy Crutchfield’s poems have been published in journals including Island, foam:e, Stilts, APJ, Westerly and The Poetry Review. In 2020/21 she won the Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize. Her first collection, “The Cyprian”, will be published by Giramondo in September.
