The newly elected Andrews government has promised to bring public ownership of electricity back to Victoria. However, there are no immediate plans to reinstate the public utility model that prevailed through much of the twentieth century. Rather, a publicly owned renewables company will operate within an electricity market shaped by decades of neoliberal reform.

With climate-change denial rapidly losing its social license, climate ‘doomism’ – the conviction that it’s now too late to prevent the collapse of civilisation – has become a new archnemesis of climate activism.

Because climate activism is based on a trust in scientific consensus, the claim that climate activists are religious fanatics is a particularly effective way to delegitimise their cause. Yet ultimately those who deploy this strategy struggle to put together a credible case for why climate change shouldn’t inspire a fanatical, even religious, passion for justice.

Is utopian thinking a distraction from meaningful politics?

Various arguments have been made to explain hypertext fiction’s lack of mainstream success: that hypertext narratives impose impossible cognitive demands on readers; that the inability to establish meaning and coherence leaves readers always floating on the surface, never fully immersed; or (to stay on the theme of immersion) that we just want something we can read in the bath.

During these deployments – many of which lasted for over five years – covert officers lived and organised alongside activists, passing information back to their superiors that would later thwart the actions they were helping to organise. Behind the sensationalism is the personal trauma of the officers’ former partners, and the story of their long struggle to attain some kind of justice.

Both films, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, explore the suffering, violence and personal and social rupture caused by the 1965-66 genocide in Indonesia.
