You don’t have to look too far (or even leave your home) to be reasoned into an argument over which films are the best, the greatest, most-essential, must-see-before-you-die of-all-time variety. The internet is teeming with hyperbolic lists dedicated to this. But what do lists like this tell us about who gets to (visibly) make and influence culture?

When I talk about privilege, I’m referencing the pride and satisfaction afforded by editors, critics and educators who continue to only teach, recommend and reference who and what they know whilst the rest of us – who may be overlooked for failing to fulfil some high-falutin requirements of being the right gender, race, class, level of able-bodiedness, something else (there’s always something else) – will continue to feel denied of the opportunity to see, feel, read, and hear ourselves out loud in literary works.

Broad City and Fresh Off The Boat are two exceptional examples of comedy that prevail by taking risks, but they can do so because they specifically speak to demographics television has ignored in the past. In a world where we often live in fear of having our words and lives taken out of context, it is liberating to know there are opportunities for us to work out what we think makes us exceptional, what we have in common with others and create intelligent situational comedy from those connections and disconnections.
