Refugee advocates in Australia and elsewhere often start crowdfunding pages or share them. Refugees, too, create these pages, because they’ve been told that it’s the only way they’ll get to safety. As my involvement with refugee sponsorship has grown, I’ve learned that these well-meaning intentions are not only ineffective for those who want to be privately sponsored, but also harmful.
