Dženana Vucic is a Bosnian-Australian writer currently based in Berlin. Her essays and poetry have been published in Australian Poetry Journal, Cordite, Kill Your Darlings, Meanjin, Overland, Sydney Review of Books, and others. She has been awarded a 2022 Marten Bequest and the 2022 Peter Blazey Fellowship to work on an autotheoretical novel. ‘Because a wind blazes’ was shortlisted for the 2023 Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize.

On hangover days my boyfriend and I watch Sailor Moon. It’s ultimate hangover viewing. It’s also, we decided one morning, groggy from the night before and running on little more than BBQ chips and gummy bears, an anti-capitalist text.

For years, nobody called me by my name. In Brisbane, I was jen; in Melbourne people called me ana. It was a neat split, my name folded into a recognisable shape, the unnecessary syllables and foreign letters turned in against themselves and shushed. It is a recent thing to have claimed the full breadth of myself.

Metonyms for home

It is tempting to read New Metonyms as first and foremost an attempt to cast Bosnia in a new light, to make over its image. And yes, New Metonyms is an art book immaculately designed to offer the world a new, more optimistic conception of Bosnia. But through this, it is also the story of diaspora, of homecoming, of the complicated relationships we hold with our past, and of the refugee’s need to prove that there is more to us than hurting. It is a work of art, of sevdah and of hope.
