A creature of places, not of books — that’s how we should understand Jenny Greenteeth. She once belonged to specific, forgotten, sites: the cold, dark, moorland Black Pool on the way to Butterdon Hill. Places of genuine hazard were Jenny’s home: the abandoned pits beside the mill dam at Moston, Lancashire, or Shooter’s Brook near Sandford and Green's Cotton Mill, long since covered over by the sprawl of urban Manchester.

In the days leading up to the election, public opinion had coalesced into two large blocs. Key to the eventual Conservative advantage was that a much higher proportion of ‘austerians’ voted Conservative.

On the surface, this year’s UK election is much like any other. Only two political parties could provide Britain’s next Prime Minister, the Conservatives or Labour. The two parties are each about 15–20 points ahead in the polls of UKIP, which is likely to trail in a very distant third.

This summer has been tough time for anti-fascists and groups like Unite Against Fascism (UAF). After several years in which British far-Right organisations seemed to be in relative decline, that situation has reversed. Electoral success has made racism acceptable once more. The killing of British soldier Lee Rigby outside his barracks in May by two young black British converts to Islam has been used by our opponents against the Left.
