Published 16 January 20247 June 2024 · Solidarity / Palestine Statement in support of academic freedom on Israel and Palestine in Aotearoa New Zealand Aotearoa Educators for Academic Freedom on Israel and Palestine We, the undersigned teachers, academics, students, and alumni of Aotearoa New Zealand secondary schools and universities, stand together to defend academic freedom. It is an internationally recognised and legislative entitlement needed for teaching, learning, and research, particularly on contentious and contested topics. We stand together in condemning organisations that have sought to undermine this freedom in relation to the current situation in Israel and Palestine and we express our full solidarity with and support for educators and researchers who have faced attempts to inhibit and limit their scholarship on this topic. On numerous occasions over recent years Israel-affiliated organisations in New Zealand have used online platforms to publicly attack academics engaged in teaching or research that is critical of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people. These attacks involve decontextualized, selective quoting and wilful and malicious misinterpretation of words said or written by academics, along with unfounded accusations of antisemitism, support for terrorism, and holocaust denial.[1] They appear to be intended to denounce, discredit, defame, defund, intimidate, silence, and potentially even create conflict within the university community, undermining employment or enrolment security for those targeted. We are always open to respectful, sincere and challenging engagement with our teaching and research, in accordance with the principles of academic freedom and freedom of expression. We do not, however, believe that ad hominem attacks on those critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank meet that standard or are of value to society. We have seen the damage done to political discourse on Israel and Palestine in the United States by groups such as the Israel on Campus Coalition and Canary Mission, which have engaged in the surveillance, profiling, and discrediting of academics and students who engage in research, teaching, or activism that is critical of Israel.[2] As a consequence of this system of surveillance and public shaming, debate on this subject in the United States is marked by fear, division, and occasionally violence.[3] Similar challenges are faced in the United Kingdom, Canada, parts of Europe, and Australia.[4] We do not want to see Aotearoa New Zealand continue down this destructive and repressive path. The events that have unfolded in Israel and Palestine over the past months will shape our understanding of international politics, law, and society for many years to come. As such, it is vital that academic freedom to teach and research on this subject, regardless of the perspective one takes on it, is defended and maintained. That defence requires calling out those who attempt to intimidate academics and students and suppress their work on any topic, including analysis of the current round of extreme violence in Gaza. It is for these reasons that: We stand unequivocally for the defence of academic freedom and condemn all attempts to silence or constrain an open and vibrant debate about the past, present and future of Israel and Palestine. We affirm our determination to maintain and defend the right to teach and research openly, honestly, and fearlessly on subjects including genocide, ethnic cleansing, terrorism, colonialism, and racism, whether in relation to Israel and Palestine or any other topic. We call upon all institutes of higher learning in New Zealand to ensure that they are properly supporting their staff and students in defending spaces of education against any attempts to harass, intimidate, or silence. We stand in solidarity with academics and students around the world who have lost their jobs or been subject to campaigns of harassment and intimidation due to expressing their views on Israel and Palestine in the course of their work or study.[5] We stand in solidarity and grief with the teachers, academics, and students in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank facing unprecedented levels of intimidation, harassment, arrest, violence, killing, and outright destruction of their places of learning.[6] We affirm our freedom and our commitment to speak about and against these attacks on education and educators whenever and wherever we see fit to do so.
