Published 11 December 202329 January 2024 · Solidarity / Palestine A statement on Palestine from Victorian teachers, school staff and education affiliates Teachers and School Staff for Palestine VIC Ministers for Education and Children: act now to protect children’s and young people’s wellbeing. A statement of concern regarding Palestine from Victorian teachers, school staff, and education affiliates Dear Ben Carroll MP (Victorian State Minister for Education), Jason Clare MP (Federal Minister for Education), and Lizzie Blandthorn MLC (Victorian State Minister for Children), We write as teachers, school staff, and education affiliates to express our sincere and serious concern over the wellbeing of children and young people locally and internationally, and the safety of all Palestinian people in Gaza. The Israeli assault on Gaza’s innocent civilians has now killed more than 17,000 people, injured approximately 46,000 people, and displaced 1.9 million people and these numbers continue to rise daily. The targeted destruction of homes, schools, universities and medical facilities is pervasive. Palestinian children and young people have been disproportionately killed, injured, displaced and have lost their family members, homes, and schools. In addition to this excessive violence inflicted on Palestinian children and young people, they are being denied their right to an education. They will need substantial immediate and long term physical and psychological support as a result of the traumatic effects caused by the ongoing ruthless bombardment. Our own students are also witnessing the catastrophic devastation unfold, which will have short and long term effects on their social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing, impeding their capacity to live and learn well. In response to the indefensible actions causing catastrophic harm, it is essential for people and governments to take an ethical stand, including those who remain accountable to the responsibility of caring for children and young people. In this humanitarian crisis teachers are trusted adults that students speak with and seek support from, particularly while they witness violent and fatal injustices. It is within our professional and ethical duty to model an anti-violence position, advocate for human rights, and foreground the wellbeing of children and young people. Our students need to know that adults, school communities, and our appointed government officials do not approve of the indiscriminate slaughter of children. Our duty of care requires that we take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of reasonably foreseeable harm to students. In order to reduce the harm to our own students and those in Gaza, we must demand our governments stop supporting Israel’s human rights violations, and cease complicity during this international humanitarian emergency. In accordance with Article II and III of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which Australia is a participant signatory of, this humanitarian crisis is a crime and punishable under international law. We call on Ben Carroll MP (Victorian State Minister for Education), Jason Clare MP (Federal Minister for Education), and Lizzie Blandthorn MLC (Victorian State Minister for Children) to: Release a statement condemning the human rights abuses being carried out by Israel on Palestinian people in accordance with Australia’s ethical obligation to international law and endorse the State and Australian Government to sever military and diplomatic ties with Israel; Issue directions that confirm the Education Departments’ support for teachers and school staff to fulfill their duty of care and professional obligation to take a stand against discrimination of any kind and protect the social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing of our students; Release a statement that advises school leaders and principals that Victorian school staff who promote and support the human rights of Palestinians are acting in line with, not against, the Victorian Public Sector Code of Conduct. This code requires that school staff respect and promote the human rights set out in the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities by making decisions and providing advice consistent with human rights, and actively implementing, promoting and supporting human rights; Ensure that false accusations and disciplinary threats related to antisemitism are not used in a way that shuts down human rights conversations in education; and Assume a leadership role in the protection of humanitarian rights nationally and internationally, including our international obligation to the rights of children and young people.
