Published 6 November 20232 April 2024 · Solidarity / Palestine Statement of solidarity with Palestine from academics in Australian universities Academics for Palestine We, the undersigned academics from Australian universities, stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of these lands and their unextinguished sovereignties; we underscore that these lands have never been ceded. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have nurtured, and continue to nurture, the diverse Countries upon which we stand.Since 1948, Palestinians have been subject to Israel’s ongoing project of settler-colonialism, ethnic cleansing, military occupation, and racial apartheid. Over the last three weeks, Israel has unleashed a genocidal attack on Gaza and its 2.3 million residents, over half of whom are children. At least 8,648 Palestinians civilians have been killed, including 3,542 children and more than 1,000 children are missing under the rubble. 1.4 million have been forcibly displaced. Entire civilian apartment blocks and neighbourhoods have been razed to the ground. The Israeli bombing campaign has indiscriminately targeted schools, hospitals, mosques and churches, doctors, ambulance workers and journalists. Schools and universities, including the Islamic University of Gaza, have been bombed. Students, including a student who had recently received an Australian scholarship to pursue his master’s degree in international relations, have been killed in airstrikes. Amnesty International has compiled damning evidence of war crimes as Israeli attacks wipe out entire families in Gaza. For the three weeks of Israel’s assault on Gaza, Israel has imposed a total siege and blocked the flow of water, food, fuel and medicines into Gaza. Hospitals have run out of essential medicines and some have ceased operating. Injured civilians are dying from untreated injuries while many more starve. What is being enacted is nothing less than collective punishment against the civilian population of Gaza. This violates one of the key principles of International Humanitarian Law.Israel has acted with impunity for decades, committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in breach of the Geneva Conventions, and violating the most basic of Palestinian human rights. In the face of a vote at the United Nations General Assembly calling for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israeli forces and Hamas, the Australian Government chose to continue this impunity and abstained from voting—in effect licensing the continuation of Israel’s unrelenting bombing campaigns and sanctioning war crimes. A Sydney based law firm is currently considering whether Australia’s support for Israel amounts to “complicity in genocide and other crimes”. Palestinian human rights groups, supported by the Australian Centre for International Justice, have launched a landmark legal action to determine whether Australian-made weapons and ammunition are being sent to Israeli forces amid its attacks on the Gaza Strip. We condemn the Australian Government for this act of gross moral failure and we call on all academics to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to support the following actions: That the Australian Government calls for an immediate ceasefire. That Australia withdraw its support—military, diplomatic and otherwise— from Israel in protest at its violation of International Humanitarian Law and in its ongoing illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, which is in violation of International Law. That the National Tertiary Education Union and other unions respond to calls by Palestinian academic institutions and trade unions, such as the Birzeit University and Palestinian Trade Unions, in calling for an end to the sale and funding of arms to Israel. That universities uphold the core principle of academic freedom of speech to protect the right of all staff and student to speak, research and engage in activism on Palestine; that they will take action on any forms of Islamophobia, anti-Arab racism and anti-Palestinian racism on their respective campuses; and that they reject International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) which censors and punishes academic engagement with issues concerning Palestine. As workers committed to anti-colonialism, anti-racism and global justice, we stand in unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people. We join millions around the world in the call for an immediate stop to this genocidal war and justice for Palestine. To add your name to the list of signatories, go to the form.
