Published 6 November 20236 November 2023 · Subscriberthon 2023 Reason #3 to subscribe: for 250 more issues of Overland Editorial Team This year we commemorated 250 issues of Overland by launching our autumn issue (#250) at the Wheeler Centre. It was a memorable night of celebrating the milestone with familiar and new faces. Copies of Overland‘s latest and very first issues were on display alongside the emu-egg-shaped Meanjin–Overland trophy.During the night, we heard from poets Yeena Kirkbright and Panda Wong, and from novelist Lily Brett and writer Jordana Silverstein, who read from her #250 essay response to Lily Brett’s issue #110 short story “Miriam.” Jordana’s essay, “Bodies. Lives. Intertwined,” is the first in a City of Melbourne-funded series of contemporary replies to our archive. We’re excited to share more of these with you in 2024.Subscribe during this very important week (as of today you only have 5 days left!) for 250 more issues of Overland, for more astonishing poetry, more outstanding fiction, more essays that will make you, according to one anonymous subscriber, “want to throw Overland across the room.” Subscribe because you believe what we do: that literature should be accessible to all—that’s why everything we publish (even, after subscribers have had some time with it, the print journal!) is made available to read for free, for everyone. For even more reasons, watch the live-stream of our launch night at the Wheeler Centre below (and then head straight here to subscribe!). Oil and acrylic on canvas. 452 x 594 mm.“This work is inspired by the snow gums on Mt Bogong, where I supported the research into the decline of bogong moths/debera on Taungerong and Yaithmatang Country. While bogong moths are a migratory, ephemeral keystone species in the ecosystem, snow gums are there all year round, glowing in the wildflower heathland and supporting the colourful community of plants, animals and humans. It is with grief that I paint the alpine region, knowing it is one of the communities most threatened by climate induced catastrophes.” MAJOR PRIZE TWOWhat’s in this major prize?A double pass to each of La Mama’s primary season shows in 2023/24, plus 2 x drink tickets per show and the La Mama book (MUP).MAJOR PRIZE THREEA HUGE haul of House of Darwin goodies, the hottest 100% Indigenous owned, NT-based social enterprise around. This time a few weeks ago the busyness and chaos of bricolage arts and academic labour had so efficiently distracted me from my anxiety about the upcoming referendum that I forgot to prepare myself for its inevitable conclusion.
