Callout: guest fiction editor and ongoing fiction readers

Paid guest editorship

Every year, Overland publishes several online editions showcasing fiction by new and emerging writers. An opportunity exists for an emerging editor to work on one of these online fiction editions, to be published in June 2015.

Late last year, Khalid Warsame was announced as our first guest editor from outside Overland‘s team of volunteer fiction readers; his guest issue will be published on the Overland site in April.

Overland is pleased to announce that it has another such opportunity for an emerging editor or writer.

The successful applicant will receive a payment of $500 to read a large number of submitted stories and to select four for online publication. The emerging editor will be an Overland subscriber with sufficient familiarity with the journal to curate writing that is appropriate. They will also have a demonstrable interest in contemporary fiction and will be capable of writing a short editorial to introduce the edition. As the fiction will be read and assessed online, the applicant can be based anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.

Fiction readers

Overland is looking to expand its team of fiction readers. This position requires a time commitment of a few hours a month. As the fiction will be read and assessed online, the applicant can be based anywhere in Australia and New Zealand. This is an unpaid position.

Readers can expect to be assigned between five and ten stories per month, and will be asked to assess whether each story is/is not suitable for publication in Overland. Readers will liaise closely with Overland contributing editor Clare Strahan and fiction editor Jennifer Mills.

Applicants will be Overland subscribers with sufficient familiarity with the journal to identify writing that suits the magazine. They will also have a keen interest in contemporary fiction.

How to apply
