The weapons industry remains masterful at propagating a number of quite specific false narratives to misdirect attention, not just at arms fairs, but across all their operations. This goes far beyond misrepresentation of police violence on protestors, and cumulatively aims to generate a social license, including for genocide.

Even as the university refuses to name the genocide and continues to intimidate those who grieve and rage against it, its processes create policy fictions that disavow activism and rewrite violent facts on the ground.

As protesters picketed outside of the Brisbane Ferra Engineering factory, there was a resounding sentiment that having Brisbane’s name bound to a system that benefits from war was not only wrong, but it signified a moral cliff edge of how they want Brisbane’s economy to function. It also signified a connection to the growing global resistance movement, that stands against the global economic ties to the chain of the military-industrial complex.

There is hope that some form of justice will be delivered to the Afghan victims of Australian war crimes. But to ensure that such deadly crimes are never committed in our name again, we must examine the role that creeping militarism plays in our society and give priority to civil institutions that strengthen our resilience against the profiteers and architects of war.

Speaking at a Moscow press conference in 1998, Oleg Gazenko – a scientist attached to the mission – expressed his regret in sombre and sympathetic tones: ‘The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it. We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.’

From the outset, white settlement of Australia met Indigenous resistance. Until the establishment of policing after 1810, and the development of case-specific punitive ‘settler’ parties and expeditions, and the use of special-purpose militarised ‘police’ units, resistance was quelled by the military.

Today the cabinet is meeting to consider whether to create a new ‘super-department’ along the lines of the British Home Office or the US Department of Homeland Security. The new portfolio would merge the Immigration department – already boasting its own paramilitary in the form of the Australian Border Force – with the Australian Federal Police and spy agency ASIO. And Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is the man who will oversee the new department.
