Norman Saadi Nikro

Norman Saadi Nikro has Australian and Lebanese backgrounds, and since 2007 resides in Berlin, where he is a Research Fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, and Privatdozent in the Department of English Literature and Cultural Studies at Potsdam University. His books include The Fragmenting Force of Memory: Self, Literary Style, and Civil War in Lebanon (Cambridge Scholars Publishers, 2012), Milieus of ReMemory: Relationalities of Violence, Trauma, and Voice (Cambridge Scholars Publishers, 2019), and Nafsiyya: Edward Said’s Affective Phenomenology of Racism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).

Currently, in Gaza, Israel is destroying the institutional basis for the reproduction and maintenance of social and cultural life, as well as administrative capacities to maintain records and documentation by which social and cultural life is organised. But in demolishing Palestinian homes, it is also destroying family artefacts, heirlooms, personal records, books, photographs and photographic collections that constitute a family’s capacity to reproduce its memories.
