Ben Etherington is a lecturer at the University of Western Sydney. Previously he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Cambridge, where he was also a member of Cambridge Academics Campaign for Higher Education (CACHE). A longer essay on the restructuring of English higher education and the lessons for Australia has been published in the Sydney Review of Books.

The steps towards full fee deregulation have appeared to be incremental, but this should not blind us to the fundamental break which Pyne’s policy will effect. It will be the final expiration of Australian public universities as Universities: as civic institutions formed around the pursuit of unprofitable truth. This not a demand-side calibration of the price of critical thought. Pyne is attempting to divert the working basis of knowledge in our society.
