Light from a distant glass atrium loiters passive-aggressively, just on the other side of Adam’s closed eyelids. It’s a hue so warm it must be sunshine, but that implies day, and he really has no idea what time it is. He is parked on a moulded plastic seat, part of an armrest-linked row skirting a quadrangle of hog-bristle walls and patterned grey carpet.

Death Road to Canada starts in Florida, in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. The player controls a small party of survivors, and the goal is to make it to the safety of the Canadian border. I spent eight weeks playing Death Road. I would wake, read the news, go to work, come home and play the game.

Because everyone would be assured a basic standard of living, a UBI would reduce incentives to undertake paid work. That is a feature of such a policy, not a bug. Most people would choose to allocate less time to income-producing activities (thereby reducing demand for a smaller pool of paid positions), and devote more time to other pursuits: charity and community work, leisure, caring, domestic work, education – and art.
