Published 10 November 202210 November 2022 · Main Posts On the second-last day of Subscriberthon, our favourite editor-duo give you reason #1002 to subscribe to Overland Editorial team Greetings friends, comrades, and our many enemies. We write to you from a state of proud exhaustion. When we took up the reins at Overland just before the pandemic we had no way of knowing the challenge we’d be up for over the next two years. Mobilised by the alignment of that year’s dismal failure of an election and the catastrophic bushfires tearing through the country, we approached our tenure in a spirit of vehement frustration. While we greeted Morrison’s departure with relief, and not a little glee, Labor’s recent budget continues the ingrained vandalism of Australia’s beleaguered arts sector, and demonstrates yet again that the strength of the arts must arise from our collective solidarity, and our capacity to unite, advocate, and allow suffering to speak against the stultifying drone of neoliberal discourse, and the rising threat of fascism in our local and global communities. Overland is proud to continue its long history of resistance and critique in spite of these challenges. Over the coming months, amidst other exciting announcements, we will be uploading our digital archive of 68 years of print publishing, with new works which will speak to and engage with this radical history. These archives are rich with polemics and long-forgotten debates in writing, publishing and the left, and offer witness to the passing of history. As we approach 70 years of publishing, we are eager to share these with you, and draw from these collective memories to think towards the radical possibilities for the future. Subscribing to Overland is a small but direct way of supporting that future, and an act of solidarity with a community of readers and writers who hope for it.In solidarity,Jonathan and EvelynFYI: The Judith Wright Poetry Prize and Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize are closing soonNeed even more reasons to subscribe?
