But we strive to make Overland a series of spaces where you can have a voice. And we know how important having time to write is. That’s why, this Subscriberthon, you have a chance to win not one, but two writing retreats. Two of our major prizes this subscriber drive are dedicated to writers – there’s a week-long writing residency at The Burrow at Wombat Bend in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, and a month-long, immersive residency in Canggu, Bali, courtesy of Global Hobo. So much of what we do at Overland is about supporting writers to write, to make exceptional work. That is why, with the support of the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, we run residencies for writers historically excluded from literature, which offer time and space, a significant stipend (equivalent to that of a working journalist), and a mentorship, all of which allow writers time to concentrate on and develop their craft. The stunning piece of poetry criticism we published yesterday was written by Susie Anderson, during her recent residency. We also work hard to create opportunities for writers – to be published, for your work to find an audience, to work with editors, to participate in literature and culture. The Fair Australia Prize is a free prize that aims to do some of those critical things we talked about yesterday: to imagine a better future through fiction, poetry, essay and art, because we recognise that literature is a way to new and better futures. (The 2019 shortlist will be announced shortly.) Similarly, the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize (judges: Hannah Kent, Margo Lanagan and Joshua Mostafa) and the Judith Wright Poetry Prize (judges: Ellen van Neerven, Michael Farrell and Toby Fitch) offer the possibility of riches and acclaim, obviously, but they also offer the gift of a hard deadline; even if you don’t ultimately place in the competition, you will finish with a story that you’re proud of. (Both prizes are currently open – and for the discounted price of $56 you can submit an entry, get a year’s subscription to Overland and enter the Subscriberthon prize draw.)
