This year’s prizes include a holiday to Ubud, original artworks, locally roasted coffee, wine, workshops – and piles of books and subscriptions. Remember: current subscribers can also take this opportunity to resubscribe and go into the draw – we’ll simply add another year your existing subscription. Subscribe today. It takes a village of literary journals to make a culture Overland would be impossible without its fellow journals – publications that foster a culture of writing and ideas, criticism and debate. In our collective pages, first-time writers sit alongside the celebrated, and significant discussions take place. Capitalism makes it seem like everything is in constant competition, but the more literary magazines we have, the more meaningful cultural conversations and literary experimentations can occur, furthering and challenging our understanding of literature in the world today. No single literary journal can do everything – cover all the subjects, publish all the writers, cater to all our cultural imaginings. We need a diversity of publications and of writers – culturally, formally and in terms of content. If you like Overland, you’ll probably enjoy one of these other publications that we offer discounted joint subscriptions with. The Lifted Brow offers experiments in reading and writing – always challenging its readers, always breaking the mould. Subscribe to both magazines for a mere $100 a year. Southerly is Australia’s oldest literary magazine. Launched in 1939, it continues to build a bridge between the academy and the garret. This month, Overland and Southerly have a specially discounted November subscription deal – a joint subscription is only $95. Meanjin is one of Overland’s oldest friends and sporting competitors.* This quarterly reflects the breadth of contemporary thinking, be it on literature, other art forms, or the broader issues of the times. For the special rate of $121, you’ll get eight issues a year and a warm feeling. (*Ed note: Overland still holds the coveted Emu Cup!) Griffith Review is a themed, agenda-setting quarterly based in Queensland. It publishes a mix of essays, memoir, reportage, short fiction, poetry and visual essays by pre-eminent Australian and international writers. With a joint $126 subscription, you’ll have all your big-topic reading covered for the next twelve months. Since 1979, Island has been one of Australia’s leading literary magazines. Today, the publication is a print-only quarterly of ideas, writing and culture. Important note: David Ireland’s The World Repair Video Game, nominated for a Prime Minister’s Literary Award for fiction, was published by Island just last year. You can take out an Overland & Island joint subscription for $100. Westerly has been shaping Australian literature from the west coast since 1956. The magazine covers literature and culture throughout the world, but maintains a special emphasis on Australia, particularly Western Australia, and the Asian region. Perthlings, show some home-ground loyalty with a joint Overland & Westerly subscription of just $96. And remember, you already have a joint subscription to Peril, Cordite, Verity La, Mascara and Sydney Review of Books – all these excellent online journals are free. Read them. Day Five: Emerge-ncy!
