On the final day of Subscriberthon, Overland’s most important members get to have their say

BORIS

A quick guide to another year of Overland, from your trusty feline, Boris. I liked the ginger cat story, though it made my human cry. I liked the talking cat, too, but I’m definitely in the “not wasting my time learning to talk” camp. But reading is good. And writing is fun, though it’s been challenging to conceal my self-paced learning as random tromping on my human underlings’ keyboards. Silly things—they act annoyed at the pretty patterns I make, but then “punish” me by topping up my snack bowl or putting me on their lap for a serious patting. Anyway, I’ve snuck on here to send you all a message: subscribe to Overland! It’s nice for us cats to sit on, it’s nice for us cats to look at, and if you leave it open for us, you might be surprised how much we enjoy reading it. Now, if I can just manage the send key …

ROCKET

I think I’ve mentioned before my hatred of all couriers, posties and Uber Eats deliverers. The most hated of them all is the postie on the bright yellow quad bike. That’s right—bright fluorescent yellow! No matter what, we never let any of them through the front door. But I have found, that if I bark at them enough, they will drop an Overland magazine on our door stop. I carry it to my owner, get a treat for my good work and everything is right with the world. So, if you have a dog, you need to subscribe to Overland. Treats on delivery assured for your dog and a barking good read for you. Neither you nor your dog will be disappointed and, if you win a prize, treats all round when the postie delivers.

Love Rocket xxx

P.S. If you don’t have a dog, get one.

DINGO

Oh hey! You have a job for me? I love jobs! I’m so good at all of them! Oh man, you still need me to sell Overland for you? That’s your job, Mum! I’m a teenager now, I want a real job, like chasing after those white fluffy things or those big mooing things, not enabling your misplaced millennial urge to cutify all your adult responsibilities!

Well, can I sniff the editions then? I really like that fresh paper smell—should I do some quality control and check if each copy has it before we send them out? What about deliveries? I bet I could run faster than the postie (I’ve tried). You’re always talking about needing to chase up commissions. Can I chase them? Oh, you just need me to sit still and look cute for a photo? Typical. I’ll be speaking with my union rep about this, Mum.

Major prizes

MAJOR PRIZE ONE

What’s in this major prize?

A stunning original artwork by Sofia Sabbagh, sponsored by the kind folk at CoPower: Snow Gums on Mt Bogong, October 2023. Oil and acrylic on canvas. 452 x 594 mm.

“This work is inspired by the snow gums on Mt Bogong, where I supported the research into the decline of bogong moths/debera on Taungerong and Yaithmatang Country. While bogong moths are a migratory, ephemeral keystone species in the ecosystem, snow gums are there all year round, glowing in the wildflower heathland and supporting the colourful community of plants, animals and humans. It is with grief that I paint the alpine region, knowing it is one of the communities most threatened by climate induced catastrophes.”
