Published 10 February 202510 February 2025 · open letter / Solidarity Open letter on academic freedom, in solidarity with Randa Abdel-Fattah Scholars against political repression We, the undersigned, write to express our condemnation of the decision by the Education Minister Jason Clare to request the Australian Research Council (ARC) to investigate the Future Fellowship of Macquarie University academic Randa Abdel-Fattah “as a matter of priority”. In the context of Israel’s monumental destruction of Gaza in a genocidal campaign that is part of its almost century-long occupation of historic Palestine, academics who have criticised Israel’s conduct in Gaza have faced relentless attacks by the Coalition, the Murdoch Press, and pro-Israel organisations. Palestinian academics, along with First Nations academics and other anti-racism scholars, have been subjected to particularly damaging campaigns that aim to end their careers, and silence their criticisms of Israel’s violence. Dr Abdel-Fattah, an award-winning author and leading Palestinian scholar, has been subjected to consistent attacks and attempts to destroy her career, including by Shadow Minister Sarah Henderson who has been campaigning for the ARC to cancel her research fellowship since April 2024. The role of the Education Minister should be to defend the independence of the ARC, not to interfere with its operations on the basis of political campaigns. In June 2024, Minister Clare announced that over the last decade, “the ARC has been bedevilled by political interference”. Clare’s current conduct is at odds with his own promise “to end the days of Ministers using the ARC as a political plaything.” As he said at the time, such interference is “not good for universities” and is “damaging our international reputation.” Like all ARC applications, Dr Abdel-Fattah’s research project on Arab/Muslim Australian Social Movements since the 1970s was subjected to rigorous peer review by academic experts and members of the ARC’s own College of Experts. Dr Abdel-Fattah’s fellowship examines “how Arab/Muslim Australian activists, working in anti-racism, anti-war and feminist social movements have mobilised a range of diverse groups (such as Indigenous activists) to establish partnerships that impact local, national and global politics.” It is a terrible irony that Dr Abdel-Fattah is facing calls to be stripped of her grant for speaking at an anti-racist conference sponsored by the First Nations led Carumba Institute at Queensland University of Technology. It is noteworthy that the academic organiser of the conference, Professor Chelsea Watego, is also facing concerted attacks and political repression, as is Palestinian academic Tasnim Sammak and Sarah Schwartz of the Jewish Council of Australia for her participation in the conference. We stand in solidarity with these scholars and activists who understand that the work of anti-racist research and pedagogy is, now more than ever, vital. The attacks on these courageous scholars is a blatant attempt to silence academic critics of Israel and anti-racist research more broadly. As such, the implications of these attacks go well beyond their impact on the academics targeted. Shadow Education Minister Sarah Henderson, for instance, has argued that the funding of Abdel-Fattah’s research “shows Labor’s decision to remove ministerial discretion from taxpayer-funded research grants was grossly irresponsible and not in the national interest.” She also admits to having “pre-emptively” pressured QUT’s Vice-Chancellor Margaret Sheil to cancel the anti-racism conference on the basis that it would supposedly provide “an opportunity to spread anti-Jewish hate and division.” Such attacks conflate legitimate critiques of Israel and the political ideology of Zionism with anti-semitism, a move that must be understood for what it is: the weaponisation of anti-racist discourse in the service of political repression and with the aim of silencing Palestinian voices. The capacity to critique and challenge the actions of nation states remains a core tenet of socially engaged scholarship across a range of disciplines. The failure to resist these attacks on academic freedom establishes a dangerous precedent for both the university sector and democracy at large. We condemn the Education Minister’s interference into the independence of the ARC. We demand that he instead guarantees the independence of the Council and defends the academic freedom of scholars in the face of political attacks. We stand in solidarity with Dr Abdel-Fattah, Professor Watego, Tasnim Sammak, Sarah Schwartz, as well as countless staff and students across the country who are under attack for their support of Palestinian liberation.
