Literature and culture for all! And other reasons to love Overland

Stephen Murray-Smith and the Realist Writers’ Group started this magazine in 1954 to help a certain kind of writing get published – one that was interested and involved in the world! That was literary, political, challenging and exciting! They aimed to publish under-represented writers and working-class writers – those who were historically, and continue to be, excluded from the fields of literature, culture and politics.

It’s never been an easy choice to be a writer, and it’s never easy to get published. But we try strive to make Overland a series of spaces where you can have a voice – in our print magazine, our daily only magazine, our special fiction and poetry editions (which publish primarily emerging writers, and are produced by emerging editors), our residencies for under-represented writers, our literary competitions and countless other opportunities.

We have passionate editors who care about your ideas and writing, and so many wonderful volunteer fiction and poetry readers: everything you submit to Overland gets read, often by multiple people.

A literary journal gives you the opportunity to see a period from different perspectives, via quite different formal approaches – through nonfiction, fiction and poetry. And at our core is that same progressive democratic temper that Stephen Murray-Smith and others worked so hard to foster.

As you would know if you’ve ever been through the editorial process at Overland, we work in the tradition of Stephen Murray-Smith and the founding principles of that writing group from 64 years ago – that you help a writer and a particular work reach its potential. That editorial approach has its highs and lows, but we are so very proud of the work we publish.

If you support what we do and the literary spaces we make, subscribe.

The bonus of (re)subscribing over the next week, during our annual Subscriberthon, is that you’ll ‘read red’ (as SMS used to say), create even more space for contributors – and you may even win some prizes perfectly produced for Overland readers.
