Peeling off scabs in Botany Bay

In Spring 2020, when an operator set up a company paying bottom-of-the-barrel rates in a crude attempt at scraping a profit out of the lines by undercutting the militant members of the MUA, the workers of port botany went feral. Led by the lines crew, construction workers, train drivers, university lecturers, teachers and students drove the scabs out.

Make public transport accessible

Passed in 2002, Federal Disability Discrimination Act requires public transport across Australia to be fully accessible by the end of 2022. Our trams, trains and buses are running late. At the current rate of progress, public transport will not be fully accessible until 2066 - over 40 years out of time.

Get close to the workers—stay close to the workers. Tell workers 'it's your union' and then behave that way. Don't do for workers what they can do. The union is not a fee for service—it is the collective experience of workers in struggle. The union's function is to assist workers in making a positive change in their lives.

Standing at Solidarity Park

In 1997, in response to anti-union legislation, 30,000 unionists marched on WA Parliament, and were ignored. On May Day, directly across the road from Parliament, aka ‘Bullshit Castle’, a site was pegged and legally claimed by unionists using the Mining Act. Remarkably, Solidarity Park is now Heritage Protected. The site is not just historic though, it’s alive. We ought to keep it overflowing with our movements.

Men who have sex with men are largely banned from donating blood in Australia and the United States. The ban on gay blood donations is a hangover from nearly half a century ago, when much less was known about HIV & AIDS. Greetings from the Sydney Opera House: completed under workers’ control

Sam Wallman

After a long string of strikes, the final stages of the construction of the Sydney Opera House were carried out without any managers. For a month and a half, the workers experienced first-hand what they had long presumed – that they really didn’t need the bosses. They planned and made decisions democratically, won huge advances in pay and conditions, and together constructed one of Australia’s most enduring and beloved icons. The building embodies all of this, to this day.
