Climate Change

My friend Damien Lawson, National Climate Justice Coordinator at Friends of the Earth, has an opinion piece in the Age today which is worth checking out. In it he makes the analogy of Climate Change and War – and makes an argument against the Rudd government’s proposed legislation.

  1. If you drive through Northern Victoria, with it's fire devastation, and pipe line works (as if draining the Goulbourn isn't going to make things WORSE) it actually looks as if there is a war on – as Lawson argues is the case.

  2. The comparison with war is very apt. It is very easy for people to say of something which will be very hard to do – such as switching all our energy to renewables in 10 years – that it is therefore impossible. But were we to go to war, as we did in 1939, the impossible becomes possible. And no matter how hard this necessary change might be, compared to World War 2 it will be easy. It will be cheaper, for one thing. And nobody need shed a drop of blood. MInd you, some toil, tears and sweat won't go astray.
