Hila Shachar is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, where she completed her PhD in 2009. She also works as a freelance writer based in Perth, Australia. Her most recent publication is the book, Cultural Afterlives and Screen Adaptations of Classic Literature (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). Downton Abbey and the Heritage Industry

I write this article with the news of Margaret Thatcher’s death in the background. The timing is not lost on me, as Downton Abbey is arguably the latest example of a screen genre that flourished during the Thatcher years: heritage cinema and drama.
